A Cold in the Soul

The Mulberry Tree Group proudly debuts A Cold in the Soul, an evocative dance performance exploring the realities of depression and the stigma surrounding mental health. Created by writer and performer Amy Buchwald (Candy Hearts, musical) and choreographed by Alvin Ailey’s Jamod Parham, this powerful collaboration blends dance and narrative to illuminate a deeply personal and universal struggle.

Structured in seven movements, each introduced by voice-over, the piece follows a central figure portrayed by multiple dancers, embodying the emotional journey of depression. Inspired by their own experiences—Buchwald’s personal and familial battles, and Parham’s loss of his sister—this work seeks to spark awareness and conversation, and bring visibility and understanding to this often-silenced topic.

The program will include excerpts from A Cold in the SoulTrust (Parts I & II), and Light, and will be followed by a conversation with the creators.
